There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for readers under the age of 18. This is a sequel to In the Wreckage and reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

After reading Hailey Turner's In the Wreckage I was thrilled to discover that Book 2 of the Metahuman Files was in the works. Well strap on your seat belt, In The Ruins has arrived. Alpha Team is back in action. And what a ride it is! You're going to be on the edge of your seat for this one. Holding on until the very last word.In the Ruins is an M/M scifi military romance. Sounds like a mouthful, yeah? Hailey Turner does it all and does it well. Explosions and chases. Shoot outs and teamwork. From tender love to sexy kink. All delicately balanced by the skill of author, Hailey deftly weaves world building, character development, action and caring, always moving the plot forward.
The saying goes that you set a thief to catch a thief and TPTB need to catch a terrorist. Not having a trustworthy terrorist on hand to use as bait, they decide to use Jamie. Because while Captain Jamie Callahan might be head of the Alpha team he is also James Callahan, son of Richard Callahan, one of the richest men in the world. Which is the perfect bait when it comes to this trap. Let the excitement commence!
Jamie and Kyle simply work. Not just as a couple but as human beings. Or metahumans, as it were. Each bring parts of themselves to the table that the other desperately needs. Together they are awesome, in the field and the bedroom. Yes, bedroom. And the wall. The shower is fair game too! Hot man on man action enclosed.
In the Ruins leaves you very satisfied and reveals more of the series' overall story arc. Hailey answered questions I hadn't even thought to ask, adding so much more to the reality of the characters and the world they live in.
Normally the second book in a series is filler, something to get through in order to be up to date for the next installment. Hailey Turner breaks this stereotype wide open. While I loved In the Wreckage, In the Ruins is now my favorite. So far. Now is the time to pine for Metahuman Files 03.
You don't have to read In the Wreckage before In the Ruins, Hailey Turner does an excellent job of bringing you up to date without sending those who have read 01 into snooze mode. But why would you not want to?

OMG! I love reading Hailey Turner's books - I can hardly wait for more. Her books are on-the-edge-of-your-seat reading & the characters are unforgettable & the m/m romance very steamy. Her books are a must read for m/m fans.
I LOVE this series!!! While romance is a large part, it is also about the team, their relationships with each other, as well as whatever mission they are on and the larger picture. Love seeing potential between sean and alexei!

I freaking LOVE Jamie, Kyle and the whole of Alpha Team so much!
Hailey has taken the world of the Metahumans and made it her own. Sc-fi, military, action and sexy times are all part and parcel of this series and every section is given full attention. The world building is awesome!
READ IT, you won't be disappointed )

Still as much fun as the first book, this installment continues the adventures of the Splice mutated team (and couple) fighting against a new foe. This series is just a ton of fun and keeps getting better.
Things get difficult for Jamie and Kyle when they go undercover as a couple. Their complex relationship gets even more complicated when Jamie has to slip back into his old, spoiled heir persona for a mission. Things get serious - and seriously fubared.
I really liked this novel, as much as the first, but something nagged at me throughout the novel and it wasn't until I read the critical review that I figured it out. I dion't think Jamie would put his Team nor his family under so much scrutiny, although one can kind of think of it as a giant middle finger to his father. That being said, I still enjoyed the novel; I couldn't put it down! Hailey has created such a believable futuristic world with these strong, sexy characters that jump out of the pages, grab my hands and drag me into their world until I have to face reality again!
What?! That's it?! That's how it ended? It's really not fair. At all. Now begins the wait for the next book in this marvelous series.
Loved the action, the intrigue, the set up for the next book(s) in the series. Most of all, I enjoyed getting to see Jaime and Kyle together as a couple. They're awesome together, both as team members and lovers. I also liked the hints that we got about Alexie and newcomer, Sean. And I've got to hand it to Hailey Turner for coming up with a very unusual setting for declarations of love!
Much of this book is set in London, and we got to meet someone from Jaime's past, Liam, whom I hope we get to see more of as he intrigued me, being a crime fighting royal.
I would not recommend this as a standalone, there's too much backstory between the team members as well as the main through line with the Splice/metahuman creation.
Jamie and Kyle continue to wow us with their loyalty and devotion to each other. Even while things heat up in the political and criminal arenas, they find islands of space to love each other.
This is an intricate PNR romance full of action and suspense. Genre-wise it should land at the top of my favorites. Other than a couple of typos, the writing is intricate, fast-paced with well-defined characters. I simply can't put my finger on why these books are not pulling me in as they are other readers. I'm always on the outside looking in and haven't been able to emotionally connect with any character yet. But I don't know why. It's so frustrating. I feel like I'm missing something important.
